Program Description

Join us on an exciting journey through the ancient city of Rome. On this two-week program, you will delve into the classical history of the Eternal City, exploring up close how architecture, art, and urban space shaped daily life in the ancient world. By the end of the course, you will have a thorough knowledge of the topography of ancient Rome and the major monuments and edifices that have survived from it. You’ll also gain an understanding of how Imperial Roman rulers made use of art and architecture to hold onto power, and how from the fourth century AD onwards Christianity gradually gained control of the city of Rome and reshaped its destiny as seat of the Roman Catholic Church.

Georgetown Faculty Directors: Dr. Marden Nichols (Assistant Professor, Department of Classics) and Dr. Tommaso Astarita (Professor & Director of Undergraduate Studies, Department of History)

Coursework

The course is designed to expose students to realities of life in the ancient city using Rome as a classroom. Lectures and discussions will take place on-site, utilizing public monuments, museums, buildings, bridges, and many other sites of historical preservation.

Upon successful completion of the program, Georgetown students receive three GU undergraduate credits for the following course: CLSS-225-62: The Ancient City of Rome, or three GU graduate credits for the following course: HIST-533-62: The Ancient City of Rome. The undergraduate course is also cross-listed with History and Art History and can count for the History and Art History major or minor. The course also fulfills the undergraduate HALC core requirement.

Non-Georgetown participants will receive an official transcript from Georgetown for their completion of academic coursework and should discuss transfer of credit with a dean or academic adviser at their home university.
